RiNGY: the school bell that rings on time.

RiNGY is a smart school bell made by our hardware partner CulTech. We built its software: the touchscreen on the device itself and the web interface the school uses to run its timetable from any phone or computer on the network, with nothing to install.

The RiNGY dashboard in a computer's browser: a large clock, the bell status and when it rings next.
The unit itself on the wall: the dashboard on its touchscreen, the AUTO ON/OFF selector and the red button for ringing by hand.

The challenge

A school bell is run by people who didn't choose the technology and have no time to learn it. Everything has to make sense on day one: on the touchscreen next to the bell, on the caretaker's phone and on the deputy head's computer.

And the bell has to ring on time even when the internet goes down: the timetable and the clock live in the device itself, and the data stays in the school.

What we did

  1. 01Research

We started from the real school day: normal days, shortened lessons, exams, holidays. Every scenario became a single action.

  2. 02Design

The same dashboard, on the touchscreen, a computer and a phone, answers the three questions behind every glance: what time is it, is the bell working, and when does it ring next. The emergency button is always within reach.

  3. 03Touchscreen

A touchscreen next to the bell for day-to-day work: ringing by hand, emergency mode and a different timetable for today only (a day off, a short day or an exam day). Actions ask for a PIN, with one exception: in an emergency, nobody should have to remember a code.

  4. 04Web interface

A web interface for computers and phones, served by the device itself, with nothing to install. A week view, automatic timetables from lesson and break lengths, up to 5 templates, exceptions by date and public holidays added in a single action.

  5. 05Care

Updates reach the devices remotely, and both the touchscreen and the web interface work in Bulgarian and English.

The product

One device, three ways to run it: the touchscreen next to the bell, a computer in the staff room and a phone anywhere on the school network.
